Creating Classroom Communities Through WOOF
What is WOOF?
WOOF (Well-Being Online Feedback) is an innovative digital tool created in Denmark by teachers, designed to address the growing concern around students’ emotional well-being and “ill-being” (unhappiness). The tool provides a way for teachers to facilitate anonymous check-ins with their students, allowing them to gauge how students are feeling emotionally and respond accordingly. By offering a platform for students to express their emotions in a safe and private way, WOOF enables teachers to take immediate action, whether it’s holding a class conversation, using other platform tools, or addressing issues in real time.
Why WOOF?
WOOF began as a pilot program at MAX and expanded after its initial success in boosting student engagement. We chose WOOF because we recognized that student engagement hinges on feeling heard, valued, and connected. The program helps improve school belonging, which is essential for student engagement. WOOF enables teachers to better understand their students’ perspectives and address barriers to engagement effectively. By incorporating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into academic settings, WOOF helps create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn.
As one teacher notes, “Its anonymous nature encourages students to be honest about experiences at school and at home.” This honesty leads to more meaningful responses from both students and teachers, further strengthening the classroom community. Additionally, WOOF provides teachers with a low-effort way to quickly check in on their students’ well-being. Based on the feedback, teachers can then offer challenges or brain breaks that encourage students to interact with one another.
WOOF is an effective tool that allows students to express their emotions, and empowers teachers to create a classroom environment that promotes emotional well-being, inclusion, and active learning.
